The Real Value of Business Networking
And Why It’s More Than Referrals
Having just arrived home from a Cappuccino Connections meeting with my local Athena Network group, I found myself reflecting on how grateful I am to have found such a wonderful community of women in business through Athena.
When I first joined, I’ll admit I was probably a very typical new business owner.
My focus was simple and practical:
-
New business
-
New clients
-
Referrals
And while referrals absolutely matter, they are the foundation of any networking group, after 14 months as a member and attending many Athena meetings and events, I’ve realised something much bigger.
The true value of business networking goes far beyond what you can directly measure.
Networking Starts With Referrals – But It Doesn’t End There
Most people join networking groups for the same reason I did. We’re building businesses, and we want opportunities. In networking terms, referrals are the basic need.
I often liken this to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, but applied to business.
At the bottom of the pyramid are the essentials, income, sales, referrals. Without these, nothing else works. But once those needs are being met, the real power of networking begins to reveal itself.
As you move up the pyramid, the value becomes less obvious — but far more impactful.
The Higher Levels: Inspiration, Ideas, and Shared Understanding
Above referrals sit the elements that truly sustain you as a business owner:
-
Motivation from people who understand the reality of running a business
-
Inspiration from hearing how others overcome challenges
-
Ideas and creativity sparked by honest conversations
-
Perspective gained through learning from other people’s experiences
This is where networking becomes transformational, rather than transactional.
Running a business can feel lonely. And while family and friends mean well, they’re not always the best source of business advice.
Your family will often tell you everything is great, because they want to support you.
Your friends or social circle may not fully resonate with your ambition, your goals, or the risks you’re taking.
But in a business network, you’re connecting with people who get it.
They understand the pressure.
They understand the ambition.
They understand the mindset required to grow a business.
And that shared understanding is incredibly powerful.
How Networking Has Grown My Travel Planning Business
As a travel planner, I’ve absolutely experienced the tangible value of networking.
Through Athena, I’ve planned many wonderful holidays for people I’ve met within the network, not because I “sold” to them, but because over time they grew to know, like, and trust me as an individual.
They’ve come to understand:
-
How I work
-
My passion for travel
-
That I genuinely care about creating the right experience for them
That level of trust doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t come from a quick sales pitch. It’s built through consistency, connection, collaboration, and showing up as your true self.
The Unexpected Bonus Benefits
One of the most unexpected benefits of networking has been how positively it has impacted my life beyond work.
Through Athena, I’ve met so many wonderful women, including members who have genuinely changed my life for the better.
Those relationships matter just as much as the business wins.
The Feeling Is the Real Value
If I had to summarise the true value of business networking in one word, it would be feeling.
The feeling of belonging.
The feeling of being understood.
The feeling of being inspired, motivated, and supported by people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
Those feelings influence confidence, creativity, decision-making, and long-term sustainability in business far more than we often realise.
Final Thoughts
Yes, networking should generate business, and it does.
But if you only judge its value by referrals, you’re missing the bigger picture.
The real magic happens higher up the pyramid, in the ideas, inspiration, shared experiences, trusted relationships, and personal growth that quietly shape both your business and your life.
Fourteen months ago, I joined Athena looking for business.
What I found was connection, collaboration, confidence — and a community that continues to help me grow, both professionally and personally.
