Have you ever joined a gym full of enthusiasm and intent to get fit, only to find a couple of months down the line you have stopped going but are still paying for your membership?
If the answers yes then you’re not the only one.
It’s true, to succeed with your fitness, you have to not only join the gym, you also have to go!
This got me thinking where else in our lives to we join or start something only for it to fizzle out, what would make the difference in it really working for us.
The answer I came up with was consistency. Once you truly commit to a goal and its outcome the key is to stay consistent, even on the days where you just want to hide under the duvet.
The awesome news is though that when you do commit to a goal like attending the gym it tends to have a positive impact on the rest of your life. You become more invested in your results, you begin to plan meals, cut out junk food and look for different exercises and routines to follow. And once you get to your fitness target, you need to maintain that level of commitment or risk going back to the start.
And this is the same as anything in life, once we commit to it then it’s only natural that we begin to see new opportunities and ways to improve. A renewed desire to learn more and succeed.
A few ways to stay committed are creating habits that will reinforce your goal. For example, going to the gym before work or during lunch, decide how you can layer habits onto things you are already doing.
Find a networking group that can support you in your efforts, preferably people with similar targets, be accountable for each other.
Know that the time you have is only now, don’t let tomorrow or next week be your excuse.
Do one thing at a time. Stay present in that activity and let it be your only focus.
This examples have been used in the context of exercise, yet that can be transferred to all facets of your life.
